The link below is to a blog written by a friend of mine, that recapped the recent events of the Miami Dade Animal Shelter, and the protest that took place, Tuesday, February 15th. Written well by Heather, she emphasizes on the shelter itself and why such a group of animal activist would reach out to the public and ask for help. The goal is simple, a new state of the art facility to be built for the animals, new management which includes the removal of Dr. Sara Pizano, and change in policies to make the organization run more smoothly.
Can there be compromise? The solution seems simple enough, so why the fight? Well it is made clear in several reports that issue is not the director, nor the shelter, it's the public! Us, we, taxpayer's, are at fault for the underlying problems. Wow! Does it seem fair to point finger's in the direction of the people that support their salaries? Read 'savetheshelterpets' blog and be the one to decide!

Michael Vick backs out of Oprah Interview

---Courtesy Blog
A follow up to a blog posted about how Oprah Winfrey would host Miachael Vick on her highly rated show; here is another to say otherwise. It appears in recent events, that Michael Vick, the NFL star quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles, has backed out. According to sources, the decision was Vick's alone. Although he did not elaborate on why he needed to postpone, he did continue to say how much he respected Oprah and her show and looks forward to doing a future interview.
Stay tuned.

Welcome to Miami - A story about cats!
This is a heart breaking truth at Miami Dade Animal Servces! So incredibly sad to see so many healthy cats and kittens be euthanized just because they are deemed "aggressive". Most of wich are frightened by their surroundings. They come into this environment in small cages and/or crates while having to pass by dogs barking, then smell other felines in the receiving room, and get shoved into a kennel that possibly may or may not have been sanitized and cleaned!
My god, is there any remorse? Do you know the difference between "aggressive" and "fractious"? I know there are feral cats/kittens which cannot be handled so much, but does that mean they don't deserve to live? They can be sedated, spayed/neutered, and then released to live a long and healthy life back on the streets where they came from. Atleast now, this cat won't be reproducing and contributing to the pet overpopulation problem that already exist.
URI is very common among cats that are not properly vaccinated, but this too can be treated and it's fairly inexpensive. Clearly, not a good enough reason to put them sleep! Would you put your children to sleep because they caugh the common cold? I think not.
Please people, understand there are options! Spread the word about low cost sterilization programs and vet care. Please do not allow innocent animals to be killed for no reason!
Oprah Winfrey hosting Michael Vick on upcoming show
The picture above is vintage, courtesy of Bad Rap, a pitbull rescue.
Below, is a link to a blog I found circulating the web. I thought it was worth a share with my animal community! It's a well written piece, detailing concern about having the football player Michael Vick on her show. The open letter welcomes comments and concerns that you may have in regards to the upcoming episode.
I think the biggest wonder is, will Oprah ask him some of the key questions so many of us want to know? Will she pull off a great interview, but get to the bottom of his bipolar attitude towards dog fighting. In other interviews, he shows remorse, and says he cares, then there are some off camera instances (that can be found on youtube) where he clearly states he doesn't care! What is wrong with him?
From what I know, I am happy to report most of his pitbulls were rescued, fostered, and adopted, into better homes! Great news! But I believe the punishment Vick received was minimal, and by allowing him back into the NFL to play was based on pure stupidity! What are we saying to our future generations? That this kind of behavior is acceptable? Another slap on the wrist, and you are off the hook? Again, this a case where justice should be more severe!
What do you think?

Pitbull Saves Woman - A dog's heroic story
This is an uplifting story! To those of you that have a phobia against the pitbull breed, you really out to research the breed and find out more about them! There is a great history behind these amazing dogs! Bred for stamina and strength, the pitbull helped families in the 1800's while hunting. Also used for protection, the pitbull became the first guard dog in America. They were also considered to be the "all american dog" and every family owned this magnificent animal!
Lately, it's been a uphill battle for this breed since they were introduced to the fighting rings and became a popular sport over the last 30 years! The proble is not the dog themselves, it's people unfortunately. People are to blame for the cruel behavior we have trained this "bully" to endure. This powerful, and majestic animal has been trained to kill and attack, by measures of abuse, starvation, neglect, over-breeding, and even sacrificed as a token of this shameless sport.
As a proud owner of a pitbull, and many pitbull mixes of the past, I find them to be the most loving, loyal, and sweetest dog you can find! My handsome boy Tiger lives with 3 other dogs of various sizes, and a cat. I rescued him by adopting from a county shelter, even after they told me he was dog aggressive. I took one look at him and saw my new dog! I welcomed Tiger into the house and within moments he knew he was home! I have never had a problem with him and his so called dog aggression. I exposed him to other dogs at parks, beaches, and socialized him with everyone I knew! That is key with any breed of dog... socialization! Especially a pet you know little about. I wouldn't trade Tiger for the world, or any of them for that matter!
My message is this: Please do not judge pitbulls based on the irresponsible owners, before you have met one personally! Surely after looking into the wide-set eyes of one of these "blockheads", your heart may just melt away. Disregard the horror stories of the few incidents proven to be true. If you are looking to adopt, my advice is to read about behavioral display, research the breed and when choosing your dog, pay attention to temperament. There is nothing a little obedience training can't help with, and that alone will give you the best canine companion!

Yes, I have a special place in my heart for the underdogs, no pun intended. My goal is to reach out and educate the public more on the goodness left in the world, not the negative. Pitbulls have a bad rap, all I can ask of you is to please keep an open mind. They are an icon in American history!

You are doomed Dr. Death (a.k.a. Sara Pizano)
This video depicts the recent events happening at the Miami Dade Animal Shelter. If you have followed the news reports on channel 7, or here on this blog, you will recognize that some of the answers given by Dr. Pizano are repetative, and a lie. This short film captures her actions, and was created to make you smile, especially knowing the truth, and how much it can hurt! Enjoy!

Robeson County - Heart Stick
This is a video of heart-sticking taking place at a local animal shelter. Dogs being dragged in against their will, and then stabbed in the heart with a needle without sedation!! Absolutely disgusting!! This must stop!! Makes me sick to my stomach to see helpless creatures treated as if they were nothing but ragdolls!! Please be aware, this video is very graphic and heart-wrenching, children must not be present while playing!! I can almost guarantee you will not last more than a few seconds after watching, and the music doesn't help either.
Please note, this is banned in most states by law. And as we watch, as I type, as we speak, of this cruel method of euthanasia, it is currently happening at the Miami Dade Animal Services Department!!! Under the direction of Sara Pizano, D.V.M., she allows inhumane acts happen daily! She must be removed of her position so that this facility may undergo a change for the better! Make a difference, do it for the animals!
Heart Stick: Miami Dade Animal Services Under Fire!
News 7, with Carmel on the Case is the hottest news circulating throughout Miami Dade, and for good reason! A heartless act of cruelty was performed by a staff member. This drew much attention to other unethical practices taking place at this run down facility.
By no means is any animal shelter going to be perfect, but by standards of health, the living conditions at some are unbearable and downright dirty! Particularly this one. Unfit for the roaches and other vermen living within the walls, a place such as this must be violating some kind of health code? Perhaps building code and compliance standards? Well despite the horrific living conditions, Miami Dade Animal Services has cause for greater concern. What can be described as a "heartless act of cruelty", has taken place. A procedure called a heart-stick. This is a method of euthanasia that can be legally used as long as the animal is heavily sedated, or anesthetized, or even by some policies, unconscious. A quick route to administer a very large needle into the heart chamber, but not to be performed on live animals due to the pain it causes. So why would a vet tech with fifteen years of experience decide to use this method on this particular night? He was pressed for time.
According to the testimony of the eye witness, there were thirty cats and kittens to euthanize, and time was of the essence. However, they were not told to cull them all this evening, they could have done what they could with the time they had and then set up holding cages for the rest until morning. Seems logical, but apparently the tech had other intentions. He holds a track record of "killing" the most animals in a day, and felt it necessary to finish his job, even if it meant breaking the law. No sedation, anesthesia, or even a good stiff drink! Just an abnormally large needle shoved into the chest, hitting the heart (or so you hope). OUCH!!! Have you ever heard a cat or kitten scream?? I mean literally a torturous cry of pain?? I have. I was the witness to the inhumane conduct performed by the vet tech on duty! What should have been a painless procedure turned into a massacre killing! With video cameras in the room to capture on film, and confirmed by a licensed veterinarian that this had taken place, the man still works there!!! Infraction or Injustice??
Well you be the judge.

Please leave comments! We are investigating the matter further, and trying to remove the vet tech on criminal charges, the director of shelter operations, and fighting for a newer building to house the innocent animals that have to call this place home!
You can follow us here, and find us on facebook! We need all the supporters (far and wide) we can get to create a movement. It's time for a change! We are their voice! Do it for the animals to make a difference! And remember, make pet adoption your first option!

Have you ever heard of a heart-stick?
This blog is unfortunately not of the happiest article circulating on the web! The link posted in this blog will navigate you straight to the source where you may read the report, and watch the video linked to the media, channel 7, Carmel on the Case. The interview was originally done back in January, and aired a few days later as a breaking news story. With all the comments, re-tweets, and facebook shares, channel 7 was forced to release another part of the initial interview as a follow up since the public was outraged!
The testimony of one eye witness that was brave enough to come forward with her horrific story has brought much attention to the local animal shelter of Miami-Dade County. This not being the first time the shelter has been "under fire", but most certainly capturing the attention of many animal advocates nationwide, and even worldwide! The director of Animal Services, Dr. Sara Pizano, is being bombarded with emails and phone calls, demanding she be removed from her position. Of course, as part of her battle against the allegations, she blames the public and media. Even more upsetting is that the "whistleblower" was terminated after her written statement was released to public records.
It's a sad fact that hundreds of animals that go into shelters, never come out! This partially due to the uneducated public not knowing about programs available to help. There are many concerns that cause pet owners to surrender their animals, or in harsh reality, cause them to stop caring for them altogether. Here's a few reasons why there is an increase in shelter intakes: economy, expense, allergies, elderly, and behavior, to name a few. True, there are no excuses to animal cruelty, abuse, neglect, or over-population, but factor in one of the above reasons and you have yourself a good argument!
I would like to extend my knowledge and help educate the public. There are many organizations willing to help you before you decide to give up a member of your family! Some options are low cost spay/neuter clinics, low cost veterinary services, rescue groups, foster homes... Please consider this first before surrendering your pet to a place where it has a slim chance of being adopted into a good home! Do not be fooled by the statistics, and what they might tell you at the door, the fact is, your are killing your pet! Even if considered an adoptable animal, it sits in a kennel and waits, all the while contracting diseases, viruses, and other illness' due to the high risk of cross-contamination! Your pet may also never get proper treatment in case they do come down with a cold, never get taken out for exercise, may get bullied by other animals it shares a cage with, and won't eat because of stress and unfamiliar territory! It would be equivalent to a human being thrown in jail for no reason. Would you like that?
Now imagine, on top of everything else, your time has expired, nobody else wants you and so you are heading to that "special" room where you will never return. Another stressful moment for any animal as they can sense the bad. Here they begin to shake from nervousness and a person whom is supposed to be compassionate, begins handling you very rough, and next thing you know you are being poked by a needle and start losing motor skills. The room goes dark, and you're out! And although you may not be able to feel anymore, the roughness is not over, the careless people throw your lifeless body into a bag and chuck it into the back of a truck where you'll wait a day before driven off to the local dump! How about that? Would you appreciate that? Let's bag grandma, and chuck her in the truck and take her to the dump! WOW!!
Think about that. Now, getting to the point of the whole story. Below is the link to the incidents taking place at a facility unfit to take in animals of any kind! I even feel sorry for the cockroaches! Imagine after everything you have just read, knowing your pet will die, you hear worse! A heartless act of cruelty performed by a staff member... He is not only going to be rough, and manhandle your pet, but he is going to break the law and HEART-STICK your beloved companion!! No sedation, anesthesia, or even a good stiff drink! Just an abnormally large needle shoved into your chest, hitting your heart (or so you hope), and feeling the injection! OUCH!!! Have you ever heard a cat or kitten scream?? Does A Fish Go Pee?
Have you ever wondered how much of the water you're swimming in is really water?
Does a fish go pee
when it's swimming in the sea?
Does it ever get the notion
when it's swimming in the ocean?
Does a fish take a leak
when it's swimming in the creek?
Do they do it in a muddle
when you see them in a puddle?
Does a fish ever miss
when it's taking a piss,
and they find urination
in the farmer's irrigation?
Do you think they're rather fond
of going potty in the pond,
and, then, for goodness sake,
do they go while in the lake?
Do they tinkle at all
while in the waterfall?
Could you see ayellow gleam
as they do it in the stream?
Now take a littlequiz:
Does a fish ever whiz?
Will afish go pee
when it's swimming in the sea?

A Dog's Life?
There once was a feisty young terrier,Who liked to bite girls on the derrière.
He'd yip and he'd yap,
Then he'd leap up and snap;
And the fairer the derrière, the merrier.
